The Aplin Center, Texas A&M University
Envisioned as an immersive learning laboratory, the Aplin Center is a new state-of-the-art facility that will provide students with an unprecedented opportunity to experience the intersection of research, education, and innovation across multiple areas of study.
Sited across from the Texas A&M Hotel and Conference Center at the corner of Wellborn and John Kimbrough, the Aplin Center will transform an existing eight-acre parking lot into an inviting communal green space. Strategically uniting the main campus with the West Campus and Kyle Field, its thoughtful design will sensitively enhance this prominent campus location by preserving the site’s legacy live oak trees as an emerald oasis.
The design of the Aplin Center is envisioned as a warm and beautiful timber building that blends interior and exterior spaces while embodying Aggie culture and traditions. Throughout, the innovative facility embraces A&M’s future by creating a fun, interactive and engaging place where Aggies will want to be and thrive.
The project’s design is an advanced iteration of the heavy timber concept that fosters innovation, wellness, and sustainability. Heavy timber was selected for its inherent ability to deliver a bespoke dynamic learning experience that supports students in their academic endeavors today while demonstrating a long-term commitment to the environment.
The Aplin Center will offer an innovative industry experience for students through new university programs in hospitality, retail studies and food product development. In addition to incorporating product development and teaching laboratories and food tasting centers, the facility will host corporate retail training and recruiting programs, along with professional development opportunities as workforce training based on industry will be a key component of the center.
In addition to bespoke spaces for viticulture, enology, and fermentation sciences, the facility will include a VR 360 sensory classroom. Upper levels will provide gathering and lounge spaces while the ground level will feature a restaurant and cafe.
Supported by a generous gift from former student Arch “Beaver” Aplin III, owner of the Buc-ee’s chain of stores, groundbreaking is anticipated in October 2025.
