New Corporate HQs Embrace Open Door Policy

Architects have begun designing a new breed of corporate campus, featuring buildings that by design open their doors to engage the cities around them. They're creating a greater sense of community between the city and the corporation, spurring nearby economic development and boosting employee retention and pride.

Fueling this novel approach to corporate headquarters design is the quest for talent, said Jon Pickard, principal of New Haven, Ct.-based architectural firm Pickard Chilton, which has recently designed the corporate headquarters campuses for Northwestern Mutual in Milwaukee, Wisc.; Dominion Energy in Richmond, Va.; ExxonMobil in Houston, Tex.; and Devon Energy in Oklahoma City, Okla.
