Construction is underway on a landmark urban mixed-use project in the iconic Chuo Ward district of Tokyo, Japan. Requiring large-scale development expertise in the exterior design and primary public spaces of what is called the “Y2 Project,” developers enlisted international architecture firm Pickard Chilton, based in New Haven, Conn.

Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC), joined by Georgia state and city leaders, today held a groundbreaking ceremony to launch construction of its new corporate headquarters building in Atlanta.

The construction of the Y2 project was started in December 2018. As a member of the landowner committee, Mitsui Fudosan is the client for this project. Y2 is one of three major redevelopment projects adjacent to Tokyo station.

Associate Rachel Howlett AIA, WELL AP, recipient of the 2018 Pickard Chilton Traveling Fellowship, recently completed her travels to Sweden and Finland. In support of her thesis, she examined human-scaled spaces, functionality and details of 20th Century Nordic architecture and design as well as their potential applicability to her own daily work.

At a recent event that included a traditional Japanese purification ceremony, ground broke on the Pickard Chilton-designed Y2 Project, a mixed-use development in Tokyo. The 3.3 million-square-foot, state-of-the-art high-rise marks the architectural firm’s first commission in Japan.
