William Chilton has directed projects for leading corporate and institutional clients worldwide. He has collaborated on the design of The Atrium (LEED Gold), a 2.9 million gsf luxury residential tower in Dubai, UAE; the 1.9 million gsf Devon Energy World Headquarters in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Four Seasons Place, a 3.2 million gsf development in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Crawford Long Hospital and Conservatory in Atlanta, Georgia; the 1.0 million gsf US Environmental Protection Agency Headquarters (LEED Gold) in Arlington, Virginia; AIM Corporate Headquarters in Houston, Texas; the 1.1 million gsf CalPERS Headquarters Complex (LEED Gold) in Sacramento, California for the largest pension fund in the United States; and California Green (LEED Gold), a 1.1 million gsf mixed-use development in Irvine, California.
Prior to the founding of Pickard Chilton, he was Ellerbe Becket’s President of Architecture and collaborated on such notable buildings as Kingdom Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which, when completed, was the tallest mixed-use complex in Europe and the Middle East for HRH Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Alsaud. The Art Institute of Chicago selected the project for the international exhibition, Skyscrapers: The New Millennium. At Ellerbe Becket he served on the board of directors and management committee and was responsible for the firm-wide practice for corporate clients. He has collaborated on the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota as well as numerous projects for Dow Chemical, DuPont, Conoco and other international corporations.
He received a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Iowa State University and a Master of Architecture from the University of Minnesota. In 2007 he received the Christian Petersen Design Award from Iowa State University, the highest award from the College of Design, and in 1995 was awarded the Design Achievement Award from Iowa State University for distinguished contributions to the arts. He is actively involved in teaching, including serving as an advanced design studio visiting critic at Oklahoma State University. He has lectured extensively at such universities as Iowa State University, Oklahoma State University, University of Minnesota and Yale University. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and served on the 2007 & 2008 juries for the ULI Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition. He has served on charitable, corporate and academic boards including chair of the Architecture Advisory Council of the College of Design at Iowa State University. He is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the College of Design at the University of Minnesota.
